Fenech returns to his coaching roots at Goodna

Western Spirit are excited to announce Joe Fenech as First Team Coach for the remainder of the 2024 season. Existing first team coach Michael Mason will move into the vacant Assistant First Team Coach role. Both appointments take immediate effect.

Joe Fenech is a highly accredited Football person who describes himself as a student of the game, because according to Joe “one never stops learning.” Having coached in Queensland since 1995 Joe is well known throughout the State including a stint as Director of Coaching for Football Queensland in several regions. Early in his career was a junior coach at Goodna, and has since been head coach at NPL side FNQ Heat (Cairns), Souths United, and Technical Director as a number of clubs including Holland Park Hawks, Michelton, Olympic, Ipswich Knights and SWQ Thunder.

Joe brings a wealth of knowledge not only to improving the player base but also by imparting his vast knowledge of the game to coaches through coach education. A hands-on coach who is equally at home working with volunteers at a grass roots level as he is with seasoned professionals. His skill development methods along with his management ability will be an invaluable asset to our club.

Joe said “My passion for football coaching has developed from years of playing and coaching the sport; This has brought me a wealth of experience and skills that I now share with players and coaches alike. I am always seeking out new ways of improving the players around me. I believe in being a mentor as well as a coach and growing confidence and competitiveness in all the players I coach is something I am very proud of. I am excited to join my local club Western Spirit as they embark on an exciting rebuilding phase for their senior teams, and manage the significant increase to their junior membership. Spirit have spent time stabilising their off-field operations, and the timing is right to progress on the field.”

The appointment of Fenech is the third senior coaching appointment by Western Spirit this year. Jacob Hunzel joined as Technical Director in February, and Zoran Simunovic joined in April as Senior Director of Football. They join Peter Williams who commenced as Senior Women’s Coach in November 2023.

WET WEATHER PROCEDURES

In the event of wet weather, please refer to the Coach & Managers Heja group or the Western Spirit Facebook or Instagram pages for confirmation if a game and/or training session has been cancelled.

The Clubs Facebook page will endeavour to provide an update on the status of home fields by 7:00am on a Saturday morning. Additionally, the Club will advise Club coaches who will contact teams, as soon as possible of any cancellations.

The best advice is DO NOT LEAVE HOME without checking Facebook if it has been raining, even if the skies are blue. Heja and Facebook will always our first port of call; notifications can be sent on some occasions via SMS to your phone for immediate notification. If you are still unsure contact the Junior Manager.

Why we close our fields.

Primarily for player safety, but also for field preservation. Our fields are precious and damage to them (especially early in the season) can have detrimental effects on the playing surface. If we can limit unnecessary degrading, we not only are ensuring it lasts for the entire season, but it also protects our Club players from being seriously injured because of an unsafe pitch being used.

Additionally, our fields are owned and managed by Ipswich City Council, and we are obligated to follow their directions on field closures. The Club is liable for repair costs when fields are damaged as a result of wet weather play. The Club endeavours to communicate this information as swiftly as possible in all circumstances, but it is never an easy process. We appreciate your patience during these unforeseeable circumstances.
